White Fillings Melbourne

A common dental treatment to fill cavities.

dentist How wonderful would it be to have all your fillings actually white? White fillings, which are also known as composite resins or porcelain inlays, can allow your teeth to be filled and rebuilt utilising more aesthetically acceptable materials such as composite resin or porcelain.

Your new white fillings do not contain mercury and are an ideal choice for you in achieving long term strength in filled teeth.

What are white fillings and should you ask for one?

white-fillingsWhite fillings, also known as composite fillings, are natural-looking and durable dental solutions ideal for small and medium cavities.

White fillings are tooth-coloured fillings that are made from a composite of plastic and glass. They are therefore also known as ‘composite fillings’. Your dentist will tell you if and when you need one, as they are placed when the tooth has decayed.

Whether or not a white filling is the right choice will depend on the area of the tooth decay. If the issue occurs in your molars at the back of your mouth where you regularly bite down hard, your dentist may advise another material, as the plastic option may not be the most suitable material.

When you do get a composite filling, the dentist will start by removing any decay from the tooth. Following this, he or she adds layers of the composite material, using a special light to harden and set each layer along the way. Once the filling is complete, the dentist will shape the material so that it feels normal to bite down on and looks natural in appearance.

What are the advantages of white fillings?

The main reason for getting a white filling is that it looks just like your natural tooth. The dentist will blend a colour that matches your dental shade, so you won’t have to worry about anyone seeing the results in your teeth. They are best for small- and medium-sized fillings, where they will provide a durable and lasting solution that will protect your tooth and save you from any future discomfort.

Are there any disadvantages of white fillings?

The only real disadvantage of a white filling is that it may not be as durable in a large cavity where you use the tooth often – such as in the back of the mouth. In this case, you dentist will advise you about other options that will be more suitable for you. Other options can include crowns or porcelain fillings.

How to avoid fillings in the first place

Ideally, you want to avoid fillings as much as possible. While a dentist can fix up any issues with a variety of procedures, the first choice should always be to avoid the need for treatment.

Start by ensuring you are brushing twice a day at minimum with a fluoride toothpaste. Remember that it takes two minutes to brush your teeth properly, so set a timer to adequately cover this time. In addition to this, ask your dentist or watch tutorials online about the correct brushing technique. Moreover, it’s important to floss daily, eat a healthy diet (avoiding sugars when possible) and visit your dentist regularly. Click here for oral hygiene tips.

Your dental professional will be able to detect any cavities that need fillings during your usual checkup, but if you experience any discomfort at any time, be sure to book in for an appointment to quickly rectify the issue.

How to care for your filling

Once you have a white filling, there is a small chance of discoloration from all the same staining agents that can also affect your teeth. For example, coffee, tea and red wine can all slowly build stains on the tooth. Keep consumption of these items to a minimum where possible and maintain a regular oral hygiene routine.
