How Does Sleep Dentistry Work?

Dentophobia is the fear of going to the dentist which causes some patients to have anxiety and panic attacks or avoid getting treatment for their dental issues. Sleep dentistry or sedation dentistry is, as the name suggests, where patients are put under anaesthesia during their treatment. This gives patients a relaxing and comfortable experience during treatment and is recommended for those undergoing extensive dental work.

Our Sleep Dentistry Services

Here at Freedom Dental, we have two sleep dentistry services for our patients, general anaesthesia and IV sedation. General anaesthesia is the most common anaesthesia as it gives patients the complete sleep experience. Patients who require extensive dental work will need to go under anaesthetic and be asleep.

IV sedation is only used for patients that have conditions that won’t allow them to go completely under anaesthetic. Thus, IV sedation is the perfect alternative where the anaesthetic is administered through an IV drip or injection that takes effect almost immediately. During the treatment, patients are awake, but the rest of their body is asleep, so you won’t feel anything. However, before considering IV sedation, our dentist and anaesthetists will need to look at your medical history and determine if this treatment is suitable for you.

Before your treatment, if you are opting for either general anaesthetic or IV sedation you must fast prior to your visit. Our dental team will advise you on what to do in the lead up to sleep dentistry and what to expect post-treatment. Our sleep dentistry services are a safe and stress-free treatment that will benefit anyone who has a fear of the dentist.

Is Sleep Dentistry Right for Me?

Sleep dentistry is a service that needs to be discussed with your dentist prior to treatment. Most common for people who have a fear of the dentist, sleep dentistry is also recommended for patients who,

  • Have a strong gag reflex
  • Can’t sit still in a dentist’s chair
  • Have sensitive teeth or oral nerves
  • Require extensive dental work and staying awake isn’t possible during the procedure

As a leading dentist in Melbourne, the team at Dental Freedom understands that every patient is different. This is why it is important that patients discuss this treatment with their dentist beforehand. Here at Freedom Dental, we are committed to offering the best dentistry services in Melbourne, and always put our patients needs first.
