Teeth whitening has become one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in Australia. The treatment is used to whiten teeth that are stained or discoloured. For many people, achieving a brighter looking smile is an attractive prospect, which is why the treatment is so popular. But, what does teeth whitening mean? Is it suitable for you? What does the treatment involve? And how long does it last?
At Freedom Dental, our expert dentists are here to guide you on everything you need to know about teeth whitening! From the initial consultation to the whitening process, we are ready to answer all your questions. Read on to find all about teeth whitening.
How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
At our dental clinic, we use Zoom WhiteSpeed professional teeth whitening. This treatment is performed under the supervision of our expert dentists and is customised to suit the patient’s needs. Then, our dentists will fit a custom-made tray over your teeth that contains a whitening agent, which is either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Once the active ingredient is applied, then the chemicals break down and allow oxygen to enter the enamel surface of your teeth. This then brightens them and makes your teeth appear shades whiter.
What Actually Happens During the Procedure?
Before treatment, a dentist will examine your teeth and gums to check that they’re healthy and stable for teeth whitening. During your consultation, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the shade you’re trying to achieve. Then our dentists will advise you on what is realistic for you to achieve and maintain, and what’s involved.
We will also place a rubber shield or gel on your gums to protect them and then take impressions for custom-made whitening trays. Then your second visit with us is when all the magic happens. During your whitening session, a bleach-based gel will be applied to the surface of your teeth. The gel is then activated, and the bleaching process is accelerated using the Zoom Advanced Power Chairside Lamp. To give you maximum results, the process will normally be repeated three to four times and will last around one hour.
At Freedom Dental, the time will race by as our team will help you relax by playing your favourite music, Netflix program, Foxtel or DVD on the ceiling-mounted TV. After the treatment, you may notice results straight away, but it will normally take a little longer for your teeth to reach their full whiteness. Over time your teeth may fade, but there’s no need to worry! We’ll provide you with a take-home tray that you can use to top up your smile.
How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?
Teeth whitening isn’t a permanent treatment, and the effects will depend on how well you look after your teeth afterwards. Our team will help you schedule repeat treatments or provide take-home kits that will help maintain your white smile.
In most cases, teeth whitening can last from six months up to two years but varies from person to person. The whitening effect won’t last as long if you smoke, drink red wine, tea or coffee which can all stain your teeth. So, to keep them at their whiteness avoid common sources of stains and take good care of your oral hygiene by daily brushing and flossing.
Is the Procedure Safe?
While teeth whitening procedures are considered safe, it’s important to know that you may experience some side effects from treatments. Some people may experience sensitive teeth and gums or a sore throat for a short time after their treatment. They may also experience slightly irritated gums, but these effects shouldn’t last for more than two days. If these symptoms last more than that, then you should make an appointment to see your dentist.
This treatment is not recommended for individuals that are pregnant or have existing health issues, as it can put them at risk.
Is Professional Teeth Whitening Right for You?
While most people would love a super white smile, it’s important to note that not all teeth are suitable for whitening. Teeth that are damaged or have holes can be problematic when whitening, which is why our dentists examine the condition of your teeth before treatment. Then we guide you through all the suitable options and choose a method that is right for you. This treatment is not recommended for individuals that are pregnant, those with existing health issues and those under the age of 14.
